Dave Whelan’s, Chairman of Wigan Athletic, recent comments regarding the usage of the word “chink” is totally unacceptable
Chinese for Labour is shocked that someone in such a position of influence has said “there is nothing bad about” calling “a Chinaman a ‘chink’”. Furthermore we are disappointed that he has hired a manager currently under investigation for sending racist text messages.
Drawing a parallel between using the term “chinks” in relation to Chinese people and using the term “Brits” to refer to British people is ignorant and offensive.
Racism and discrimination is still a part of everyday life for many British Chinese. Such comments only serve to proliferate and normalise the continued use of discriminatory and racist language.
We are pleased to hear that the Football Association is to launch an investigation into Whelan’s remarks.
However, to date no senior Conservative minister, including Prime Minister David Cameron and the Secretaries of State with responsibilities for sport and equalities have commented on the incident. The Prime Minister must make it clear if he personally condones or condemns Whelan’s comments.
Since 2007 Whelan has donated £1.5 million to the Conservative Party, and his last donation of £100,000 was as recent as August 2014.
Racist comments have no place in modern British society, and we believe that the political donations received from Mr Whelan should be given up and donated to charitable groups.
Failure to act swiftly in this matter will show a lack of leadership. It will not be possible for the Conservatives to simultaneously condemn offensive remarks while accepting large sums of money from those responsible for them. On this actions will speak louder than words.
