Chinese for Labour calls on the British Government to ensure fair treatment to the Chinese community after a recent report of a raid by the UK Home Office in London Chinatown, where a woman was seen protesting by lying in front of an immigration van.
Responses on Facebook to video footage of the incident have alleged that Home Office immigration officers now make weekly visits to the business in London Chinatown, and that the Chinese community is being aggressively targeted.
Sonny Leong, Chair of Chinese for Labour says, “We at Chinese for Labour are deeply disturbed by reports of the disproportionate number of raids by the Home Office on Chinese businesses. While we acknowledge that the Home Office has an obligation to uphold the law, we fear that the alleged systemic targeting of Chinese businesses is in order to look tough on immigration by targeting a community that is likely ‘to not cause trouble.’
“The Windrush scandal revealed a deliberate policy by the Home Office to create ‘hostile environment’ policies designed to deter undocumented workers. For the sake of transparency, we want the Home Office to demonstrate that the Chinese community are not being specifically targeted.
Alvin Shum, Communications Officer for Chinese for Labour says, “There has been for a long time a cultural mentality within the Chinese community of not disturbing the peace and keeping our business within ourselves. It is why systemic racism against the Chinese community has been under-reported due to a fear of backlash from the state.
“We want to make it clear that the Chinese community will not passively accept racial profiling. We will be working with our allies in the Labour movement and call on the government to prove that the Chinese community is not being specifically targeted.”
