The Prime Minister should be ashamed of himself with friends like Jeremy Clarkson.

by Sonny Leong, Publisher and Chair, Chinese for Labour

January 2012

Here we go again, motomouth, Jeremy Clarkson in a column for a tabloid newspaper, mocked the sport of synchronised swimming as "Chinese women in hats, upside down, in a bit of water", adding: "You can see that sort of thing on Morecambe Beach. For free."

To add to a comprehensive list of the different groups of people Jeremy Clarkson has offended during the course of his journalistic and broadcasting career would surely shame the BBC. Back in May 2010, the Cameron promised Britain would play a "strong" and "positive" role in working with our European partners. However, as Britain woke last Friday to discover Cameron used his veto, it became painfully apparent that the government has reneged on this promise and in the process worryingly sidelined Britain in Europe.

James Dyson has no commitment to his workforce and his only concern is for making greater profit. In 2005, Dyson reported profits had passed £100 million, allowing him the luxury of trying to decide how much dividend to pay himself and his wife. They took out £17 million, helping to pay for a country estate.

Where are the Chinese in EastEnders, Coronation Street or Emmerdale Farm? Script writers, directors and producers have totally ignored the presence of Chinese in their works, or if they feature Chinese, they are normally portrayed in a negative sense, as prostitutes, drug pushers, and gangsters. The Chinese excel in a number of areas - in the field of research, science and technology, academia, healthcare, finance and business. In spite of all these successes, we are still portrayed as take away owners or kung fu fighters! This stereotyping has to stop.

November 2011

Following on from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) statement yesterday, dole queues would lengthen to more than 9% of the working population as growth slowed, Britain will go back into recession this winter because of a fresh increase in unemployment, a squeeze on family budgets, government spending cuts and the eurozone crisis. The Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR) today projects growth would be 0.9 per cent in 2011 and 0.7 per cent in 2012. It looks like Osborne will now have to borrow more than £158 billion.
